What South Carolina Has Done to Answer the Call to Help

Since September 11, 2001 many South Carolina lives were lost and changed.  Since September 11, 2001 South Carolinians have done many things to help.  On this link you will find many ways South Carolina people have helped and ways South Carolina people can help.

S.C. Cargo Planes drop food for Afghans 

                 On Monday, October 8th, C-17 transport planes, from Charleston, dropped humanitarian aid in Afghanistan’s highlands.  Two bases in Charleston with military personnel on active duty in the 437th Airlift Wing dropped food in Afghanistan.  On Sunday, October 7th, the two South Carolina crews, who were flying from a German base, dropped over 37,500 “humanitarian daily rotations.”  Charleston Air Force Base spokesman Lt. Col. Edmemi said, “It was a long hours flight, and it was one of the more demanding flights because it was a 22 hour flight and because of the nature of the mission.”

Some other ways SC has helped are:

·          Many South Carolina people donated to the White Knoll Middle School fund to buy New York a new fire truck.

·         Going to benefits for widows and children

·         Participating in the Hero Fund. Already radio stations have raised $72,000

·         October 6-7, you could have helped with the “boot drive” South Carolina firemen held

·         Wal-Mart stores have donation boxes.

·         Food Lion and Lowe’s stores have American Red Cross donation boxes.

·         Kroger stores have a Round-up program that the cashiers can help with. They round up your amount to the next dollar and donate that amount to the Red Cross.

·       South Carolina high school’s ROTC units collect money at ballgames and other fundraisers.

·        Home Depot stores have United Way donation boxes.

·         In Myrtle Beach, the American Red Cross has $1 ribbons you can buy.

·        The BMW company in Greer, South Carolina will have their vehicles used straight off the assembly line. They will donate vehicles for the rescue workers in New York City to use.   They have donated $2.4 million in money and vehicles to disaster agencies.

·         Students at Camden Primary School learned how to properly raise and fold the flag.

·         South Carolina firefighters and residents raised more than $1 million for families who lost  family members in the line of duty.

·         South Carolina residents have donated a lot to September 11, 2001 funds.

·        Seven year old Will DuBose and other South Carolina children have donated lots of things.  Will even donated his birthday presents to the American Red Cross.

·         Richland 2 students in South Carolina won a “Lighting the Path to World Peace” poster contest.

·         You can donate money to the children of American’s first combat in Afghanistan by sending it to :

·         Elgin, South Carolina will continue raising donations, they also had a candlelight vigil. Donations can be sent to :  Elgin Town Hall

·         Leslie M. Stover School in Elgin, South Carolina donated many bags full of stuffed animals to the “Comfort the Children Drive”.

·          Leslie M. Stover School also set off patriotic colored balloons in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

·         Blaney Elementary School in Elgin, South Carolina put on a patriotic performance. The multiage students sang about 4 patriotic songs and handed flags to all of the firemen, police officers, and  rescue workers.

·         November 3, 2001 the Kershaw County community was invited to a prayer service in Camden, South Carolina.  Dr. Bill Drees helped organize the events.

·         Many upstate South Carolina companies donated to September 11, 2001 funds. Bowater, Michelin, Gannet Co. Inc., Texaco, Chevron, Amerada Hess, Chrysler, Pfizer, and General Electric all donated money. Microsoft donated money and software.

·         Lorraine Kelley and many other South Carolinians donate their time to the American Red Cross.

·         The American Legion Auxiliary in Camden, South Carolina participated in the “Comfort the Children Drive” and got more than 50 stuffed animals. Out of all the South Carolina departments they got 4,000 stuffed animals. These went to children who lost parents September 11, 2001.

·         Lisa Holland, who used to live in  Camden, South Carolina wanted to do something to help after September 11, 2001. She wrote a book called Jake’s Journey. It will help children 5-11 years old cope with events similar to September 11, 2001. The profits will be donated to Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund.

                I think these are wonderful things South Carolina has done to help.  I hope everyone has done something, obviously South Carolinians have!  Hopefully children understand the events that took place September 11, 2001 with the book Jake’s Journey.  Many South Carolina companies have donated money or goods. All of these are great ways, hopefully you have participated in!

                The list could go on and on and there are many more things that have been done.  We would like to offer this to victim’s families. A teacher suggested we should offer our Southern hospitality in a time like this.  She has a Myrtle Beach  house and would like to give a week to a victim’s family in New York.
