Morris Island

The Morris Island lighthouse is made out of stones and bricks. In 1767 it was only a few stones using pitch and oakum, later candles were used to light it.  In 1837 the lighthouse was replaced by a new one that is 102 feet tall.

The lighthouse is off the southern coast and it  was battered in 1885 and 1886 by a hurricane and an earthquake. It was still standing after both disasters!!!!!!!!!!!! It had a first order Fresnel lens that was destroyed during the Civil War.

Because of beach erosion, it now stands in the water of Charleston Harbour.
