The Circular Congregational Church

150 Meeting Street

The Circular Congregational Church was founded in 1681.  It was formally called ''The Independent Church of Charles  Towne''  it was the first out of all the churches in South Carolina to start a Sunday school.

The first church was destroyed in fires and earthquakes.  In 1809 Robert mills designed the circular structure.  This church burned in 1861 and the current church was built in 1891 using some of the bricks from the original structure!

Edward Brickell designed this church. It was the first church to be built in the Gothic style. The great earthquake of 1886 and the Revolutionary War made some of the church crumble. Restoration took place in 1997 to help preserve this great structure. The original Tucker organ is one of the rarest in the country and has been restored by the Preservation Society.
