Racial Distribution of the African Slaves

In South Carolina around 1790-1860 Black slave owners existed just as White slave owners.  Black masters used slaves as servants and personal farmers.  They also bought and sold the slaves for any desired profit.  There were some tiny differences though.  Research shows that Black owners tended to become good friends with their laborers more than their White counterparts.  Another bonus for slaves who had black masters was that they usually worked off their freedom and the freedom of a relative that most likely worked for a White Master.

The Census, surveys and test that were taken in South Carolina also showed that most black master were Mulattoes or of Mixed Origin (a mixture of African and White). These tests also showed that Mulattoes didnít often enslave any of the other Mulattoes only blacks that were fully African.  Even though blacks and Whites were considered different in those days it seemed that slavery wasn't an issue of right or wrong, it was an issue of prosperity and status.
