Christ Episcopal Church

This church was the very first church formed in Greenville. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Christ Episcopal Church was organized in 1820 by "summer people", who wanted to worship in Greenville like they did when they were at home. Locals called the church the "snap-bean" church because most members only attended when snap-beans were in season. The present structure, whose cornerstone was laid in 1852, replaced the original structure, which was at the same site. The modified-Gothic-style church has a cruciform shape and a spire that is 130 feet high. Some notable local leaders have been buried at Christ Episcopal Church's graveyard, including a former governor, Benjamin Franklin Perry, and Vardry McBee.
