Furman University

Furman University was founded in 1826 by Richard Furman, for whom the school is named. Richard Furman was a clergy and educator who helped to organize the SC Baptist Convention which led to the founding of Furman in Edgefield. In 1837 the Furman Theological Institute opened in Fairfield District and thrived but was later moved to Greenville in 1850. In 1992 Furman broke its ties with the South Carolina Baptist Convention after 166 years. Today, Furman's private campus lies at the foot of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Furman has been chosen by the Princeton Review as one of the top five most scenic university campuses in the country, and has recently been named one of the most beautifully landscaped places in the country by the American Society of Landscape Architects. US News and World Report places Furman University in the top 50 Liberal Arts Colleges in the United States. Furman has about 2,800 undergraduate students.
