Built in 1920, and opened for business in 1925, the Poinsett Hotel was the main hotel in the Greenville area for many years. The hotel was designed by New York architect W.L. Stoddard and built by Henry B. McKoy. The Woodside Brothers financed it at a cost of $1.5 million. People would go out of their way to stay at this hotel, which earned its name "The Carolina's Finest Hotel" for its service, food, furnishing, and china. Before it was the Poinsett Hotel, it was the Mansion House. The Mansion House was built in 1820 when people came to Greenville from the coastline during the summer to escape the disease and uncomfortable weather conditions that plagued the coastal area. The Poinsett Hotel was open once again in October of 2000 after an extensive $20 million renovation. |
