Morris Island (Old Charleston) Lighthouse

The Morris Island Lighthouse was built in 1767, after the French and Indian War. At the time, South Carolina was still a British Colony. A copper plate was attached to the cornerstone of the lighthouse, it said, "The First Stone of this beacon was laid on the 30th of May 1767, in the seventh year of his Majesty's Reign, George the III." In 1837 the lighthouse was replaced. The new lighthouse was located near Fort Sumter and stood one hundred and three feet tall. The lighthouse is declared a National Historic Landmark. The Morris Lighthouse is surrounded by water now, and it needs preserved. The foundation called Save the Light, Inc., bought the landmark for $75,000. Now the foundation is trying to talk to the state and federal agencies for help to preserve the landmark.
