As
a young child, Ivey Lowe attended Mt. Bethel School which was a rural
school in the Mt. Bethel community.
He has many memories of this school.
He remembers the teacher allowing him to start to school before
he was six because he wanted to attend school with his sister Shirley.
He remembers playing with his friends at recess and going on
short trips as a class to the creek located about 1/2 a mile from the
school. He recalls his
teacher taking the children in her car to pick up students who were
absent from school. He also
recollects going with the school to see a movie in the nearby town of
Honea Path when he was small. During
this time, there were no televisions so this was a real treat for the
students. Many of the
students were shocked by this new experience.
Mr. Lowe was so frightened by seeing the witch in the movie Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs. He
jumped from his seat and ran down the street.
Luckily, his teacher caught him and explained to him that it was
only pretend!
When Mr. Lowe entered the 6th
grade, the new community school was ready.
He began the sixth grade at Wright Elementary. He recalls the principal, Mrs. Major being very strict.
Wright Elementary was a very nice, new school and she wanted it to
remain clean and well kept.
Mr. Lowe has had two children, Lana Major and Laurie McCall to
attend Wright Elementary. Lana
Major has taught 13 years at Wright Elementary and his wife has been an
instructional aide at the school for 26 years.
He has a grandson, Ben Major who attends the school now.
He has three grandchildren Katherine Major, Taylor McCall and Sam
McCall who will also attend Wright Elementary. Interviewed
by: Ben Major ** Mr. Lowe is pictured in his first grade classroom at Mt. Bethel School. The recent picture shows Mr. Ivey Lowe with his grandson Ben Major.
