Fort Granby

Granby was a town which later became Cayce.  During the Revolutionary war the trading post became a fort.   At Fort Granby the British forces came at an early 1781 and named it Fort Granby.  A Patriot spy named Emily Geiger was caught by the British and taken  to Fort Granby to be searched and questioned.  While she was waiting for a woman to search her she tore up the secret message that she was carrying from Gen. Greene to Gen. Sumter and ate it.  She nearly choked on the message because it was so dry.

Emily Geiger

Emily Geiger was  an 18 year old girl who lived  near Gen. Greene's camp in the Up Country of  S.C. She carried a message from Gen. Greene to Gen. Sumter asking Sumter's troops to get together with Greene's.  She had to deliver the message by word of mouth because she was captured  by 3 Tory soldiers and had to eat the paper message.
